Lines 04:13
I went to a fortune teller on St. Clair, west of Forest Hill. I know – I was curious, had a half hour to kill. It was in one of those row houses with dirty, brown-brick walls, neon signs in the window, a flashing eye, a crystal ball. Whoa, isn’t it something, believing we can change? By doing something funny, by doing something strange. She peeked out of the back room, took my twenty then my hand. Her hair was greying at the roots, held back by a rubber band. She asked me questions, told me lies – I hadn’t expected more. Heard a fight break out somewhere, glanced toward the door. Whoa, isn’t it something, believing we can change? By doing something stupid, by stepping out of range. This line is for life, this line is for love, and they don’t cross. This line is for life, this line is for love. Oh, love. It was dark when I walked out, the street smelled like blood and sweat. I wanted to go home, but you hadn’t moved out yet. Thought about what I’d been told while I waited for the bus. Turned it over in my mind, tried to make it about us. Whoa, isn’t it something, believing we can change? By doing something different, by seeing someone else. Oh, love.

In Time 04:44
Hey, lover of mine: are you awake? I dreamt of green hills and two blue lakes. The sound of swans, calling as they flew. Their wings beat the air, two by two in time. Is it cloudy where you are? Are the northern lights strumming on the stars? Play one for me, oh how you touch those strings. I miss your careful way of doing things in time. In this fog it’s easy to get lost. Everything looks silver, raindrop-glossed. The map is no use and sightlines are few, but the heart doesn’t lie: the road leads to you in time.

Concrete 01:51
Concrete goals, concrete streets, concrete sleep in concrete sheets. Concrete tasks to do at concrete hours, concrete plans made in concrete towers. Concrete lets you build so high, concrete can block out the sky, it is undeniable, concrete is reliable. Concrete playgrounds, concrete games, concrete homes in concrete frames. Concrete numbers on a screen. Concrete fun in limousines. Concrete lets you build so high, concrete can block out the sky, it is undeniable, concrete is reliable. So down with flowers, down with birds, down with love in general. Down with starts and butterflies and everything ephemeral. Melt ’em down, mix ’em well, toss them in a mould: things are only worth as much as the weight that they can hold. In a battle where you must face triumph or defeat you’d be silly not to bet your money on…

Loughbreeze 04:38
Lake to the south, lake to the east. Low breeze on the water, deer tracks on the beach. You don’t have to share this place with anyone if you don’t want to. Crack some eggs, melt some butter, find that recipe of your mother’s. Set the timer, let it bake, clean the kitchen while you wait. You don’t have to share your cookies with anyone if you don’t want to. They checked you in yesterday, it was a total surprise to me. I wanted to run away when you turned your eyes to me. Bandage up the wound, bring flowers to the room. Remember you’re tough. Hope it’s enough. You don’t have to share your story with anyone if you don’t want to. It’s just a short drive, and visiting hours are nine to five, but I don’t have to come see you. Lake to the south, lake to the east. Loughbreeze on the water, deer tracks on the beach. You don’t have to keep fighting if you don’t want to.
